How Long Does a Divorce Take?
Preparing the paperwork is quick. The timeline is really set by your state's waiting period and how busy your court is, here's what to expect.
There's no single answer, but the pieces are predictable. Once you understand what actually takes time, you can plan around it.
The part you control is fast
Gathering your information and completing the paperwork usually takes a weekend or less for an uncontested divorce. This is the step people dread most and finish quickest.
The waiting period is set by your state
After you file, many states impose a mandatory waiting period, a cooling-off window before a judge can finalize. It ranges from none at all to about six months depending on where you live. There's no way to skip it, so it's the main driver of your total timeline.
Court processing adds a little more
On top of the waiting period, the clerk needs time to process everything, and a busy county can add a few weeks. Contested issues can stretch this into many months, another reason agreeing between yourselves pays off.
For a typical uncontested divorce, plan on a few weeks to a few months from filing to final decree, most of it spent simply waiting out your state's required period.
